South Florida’s Hialeah Park has hired former Gulfstream Park president Steve Calabro to run its gaming division, according to the Blood-Horse. Calabro will be in charge of a casino Hialeah plans to start building this fall.
The casino is expected to open in November, 2012, although Calder Casino & Race Course and two other local pari-mutuel operations have challenged its legality in court. A 2010 law permits a casino at Hialeah as long as the track continues to run Quarter Horse meets, but the plantiffs contend a 2004 state constitutional amendment overrides the legislature’s decision.
Calabro resigned from Gulfstream Park in June after a year as general manager and president. Prior to that, he was vice president of gaming at Gulfstream.
